The Faculty of Law at Nelson Mandela University hosted an exciting ‘Oceans, Justice and Human Rights Conference’ on 3-5 November.
The Environmental Law Association of South Africa partnered with Nelson Mandela University, with involvement from, among others, Executive Committee Member, Tanya Wagenaar, Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Nelson Mandela University.
Given the ongoing campaigns of organizations like Protect the West Coast, Sustaining The Wild Coast, and the Amadiba Crisis Committee, there is no doubt that discussions about how to protect the environment in ways that advance justice and human rights are particularly timely. In the context of protecting the ocean and advancing justice and human rights, we are reminded of the words of inspirational activist, Nonhle Mbuthuma, about the 2022 judgment preventing Shell from engaging in seismic surveys off South Africa’s Wild Coast:
The programme is available below.
One of the highlights of the conference was a keynote address by David Boyd, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment.
