2021 Student Conference: Celebrating 25 Years of the 1996 South African Environmental Right

In 2021 the ELA student conference, sponsored by Juta, took place online, via Zoom, between 13 and 14 September.

Copies of the book, Land Matters, by our keynote speaker, Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, were awarded as prizes with thanks to Penguine Random House.

With thanks to Juta, the best student presenters at the student conference won prizes:

  1. Ruth Kruger (LLB gradate, Wits and Law Clerk Constitutional Court) won first prize for her presentation on The Environment is Ours – The Socio-Economic Promise of Section 24 of the Constitution 
  2. Nonhlanhla Ngcobo (PhD candidate, CLES, NWU) won second prize for a brilliant presentation on The constitutional environmental right of street traders in the Anthropocene 
  3. Maricélle Botes (PhD candidate, CLES, NWU) won third prize for her presentation on The constitutional environmental right and its application to ecological governance for urban ecosystem services protectionCongratulations to all three students on their wonderful research.
