Rotten, Lawyers Guns & Honey
On 30 June 2020 our Streaming Club watched Episode 1 (Season 1) of the documentary series Rotten (on Netflix). Netflix describes the episode – Lawyers Guns & Honey – as a look at “the new global honey business and largest food fraud investigation and prosecution in history — a scam known as Honeygate”. One reviewer of Rotten states: ‘It’s not as much an assault on our diets as much as an eye-opening examination into the business of food production and the corporate and criminal malfeasance that is a part of the multibillion-dollar food industry’ –Tom Roston, Salon.
After the episode, the Zoom discussion was chaired by ELA Executive Committee member, Kate Handley, consultant attorney at specialist environmental law firm, Culinan and Associates. The expert speakers were Prof. Joni Adamson (Arizona State University), an expert in environmental humanities, including food sustainability, and Ms Naeema Gabru (an attorney and law lecturer at NWU as well as a bee farmer).
