Our Sand
On 25 August 2020, our Streaming Club watched Our Sand a short film by South African environmental activist, Keletso Malepe, about the devastating impacts of sand mining in South Africa, and obstacles to effective community activism. The Zoom discussion was chaired by Prof. Michael Kidd (UKZN), ELA Executive Committee member. Keletso, an MSc student in environmnetal resource management at University College Dublin, was one of the guest speakers in the Zoom discussion that followed, and she shared with us what inspired her to make the film and lessons she has learned from making the film. We also heard from two guest speakers joined from the Centre for Environmental Rights: Matome Kapa, Programme Head: Activist Support and Training, and Tatenda Muponde, a candidate attorney, as well as from Dr Yolandi Meyer, a post-doc fellow at the University of Johannesburg, whose research interests include human rights and the environment.
