Prof. Dr. iur. Helen Keller, LL.M, is a professor of law at the University of Zurich. Additionally, she was judge at the European Court of Human Rights from 2011 until 2020. From 2008 to 2011, Prof. Keller was a member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee. She was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Fribourg in 2018 for her contribution to cross-fertilisation of doctrine and practice. In 2024, Prof. Keller was honoured three times. In June, she received a nomination as part of the “75 Women in 75 Years of Council of Europe History” project. In October the University of Geneva awarded Prof. Keller the title, Dr honouris causa. In November, she received the Robert Kennedy Prize. Further, since December 2020, Prof. Keller has served as a judge at the Constitutional Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Prof. Keller will share insights on European climate change litigation that have value from a comparative perspective for lawyers and academics in South Africa, including as the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights faces a petition on the obligations of states amidst the climate crisis, and as domestic courts in South Africa are increasingly confronted with cases that deal with the causes and impacts of climate change. An example is the TotalEnergies case decided in August 2025.

The Environmental Law Association of South Africa thanks Prof. Anél Du Plessis and the Chair in Urban Law and Sustainability Governance at Stellenbosch University for generously hosting this event.
