SUMMARY:Student Essay Competition
DESCRIPTION:With the aim of promoting the advancement of knowledge and prof
 iling new voices in environmental law our 2020/2021 essay competition was 
 open to any student enrolled at a South African higher education instituti
 on (including undergraduate and postgraduate programs) or who graduated in
  2020\, and whose research concerned an environmental law topic.\nStudents
  were invited to submit essays based on their environmental law research t
 o us (including edited versions of their LLM/LLB dissertations). Entries c
 losed on 31 May 2021.\nEssay submissions were adjudicated by an independen
 t panel of experts from July-August 2021.\nWinners were announced and priz
 es were awarded at the closure of the student conference on 14 September 2
 021:\nIn the LLB category\, the winning essay was by University of Pretori
 a\, Faculty of Law 2020 LLB graduate\, Nicola Irving\, on Conservation cr
 ime and pangolin poaching: Tensions between customary use and conservation
  law.\n\n\n\nIn the LLM category\, the winning essay was by University of 
 Pretoria\, Faculty of Law 2021 LLM in Constitutional and Administrative La
 w graduate\, Ursula Papé\, on A critical analysis of the evolution of pu
 blic participation in environmental decision-making in the South African m
 ining sector.\n\n\n\nBoth essays were supervised by Dr Melanie Murcott\, S
 enior Lecturer in Environmental Law at the University of Pretoria.\n\nCong
